Quartz Var. Herkimer Diamond

A superb large Herkimer diamond featuring exceptional clarity with internal inclusions of black anthraxolite, creating bold contrast within the glassy crystal interior. A slightly smoky hue gives this piece an intriguing gray-champagne color, which pairs beautifully with its great transparency. This piece weighs just over 35 grams and measures 46 mm, with sharp, edges, high luster, and an sharp geometric form that reflects light beautifully. A smaller associated crystal is perched along one face, enhancing the visual balance and display quality of the specimen. Its impressive size, excellent quality, and striking internal features make it ideal for a high-end or museum-quality collection. This specimen was mined in 2024 by Willie Fannon and Heidi Grunenwald from a hydrocarbon-rich pocket located in the Herkimer Diamond Mine in Middleville, New York. The pocket—slightly smaller than a volleyball—was dense with anthraxolite and yielded numerous high-grade crystals ranging from water-clear to champagne smoky, with the finest examples like this one exhibiting outstanding sharpness and form. As with most Herkimer Diamond specimens of this size, it has been expertly reconstructed along one natural contacts with Loctite Light Cure Adhesive.
