An excellent three-dimensional cluster of pseudohexagonal celestine prisms with vitreous white faces. A secondary growth of small, glistening crystals cascades across the specimen, gathering at its peaks and troughs like windblown snow. At the centers of the terminations on the larger crystals, hints of translucent blue show through the opaque white, adding depth to a sculptural piece.
This is the celebrated “marshmallow” celestine from Lime City Quarry, Ohio, a style that came out of the quarry in the 1960s and 70s. The quarry has since flooded and no longer produces specimens. Under longwave UV, the crystals glow a light green. They are also phosphorescent, so the glow persists briefly after the light is removed.
Ex Eugene E. and Jacqueline E. Schlepp collection.
