Wavellite
Wavellite
Silver Coin Mine, Valmy, Iron Point Mining District, Humboldt County, Nevada, USA
67 x 27 x 23 mm | 47.89 g
Beautiful white spheroidal groupings of the rare mineral, fluorwavellite on an earthy brown matrix. This specimen came to us as part of an old collection, where it was labeled as wavellite, the mineral these crystals were originally identified as, from the Silver Coin Mine. Later work has changed that. Fluorwavellite, the fluorine analog of wavellite, was approved by the IMA as a new mineral in 2015, and a 2017 study by Kampf and colleagues found that every wavellite sample they surveyed from Silver Coin was actually fluorwavellite. Based on that research, this piece is best identified as fluorwavellite. A particularly attractive specimen of this rare species!
