Rhodochrosite and Quartz
Rhodochrosite and Quartz
Davidkovo ore field, Davidkovo, Banite Municipality, Smolyan Province, Bulgaria
29 x 27 x 14 mm
Rhodochrosite ranks among the first minerals to come to mind when one considers the pink to red range of the color spectrum, and with good reason — the species occurs across an impressive tonal range, from delicate baby pink to deep, saturated red. The Davidkovo ore field of Bulgaria has established a distinguished reputation for producing elegant associations of softly colored, baby pink rhodochrosite rosettes with a characteristic pearly luster, paired alongside prismatic, colorless quartz crystals; a pairing well exemplified by this specimen. The combination offers a striking structural contrast between the curved, aggregate form of the rhodochrosite and the sharp geometry of the quartz, resulting in an association of considerable aesthetic merit.
