Stibnite forms primarily in low-temperature hydrothermal deposits and is an important source of the element antimony (Sb). Hunan Province, China, is a major producer of antimony ore. Though the vast majority of stibnite is broken down to extract the antimony, a portion of well-crystallized specimens make it to the collector market. Fine stibnite specimens are prized by collectors for their metallic luster, defined striations, and intricate crystallization. A particularly desirable feature exhibited by some stibnites is crystal curvature. This characteristic appears in a smaller percentage of specimens, with some showing sharp bends while others, such as this one, display a gentle arc. Between the beautiful rounded-looking termination, graceful curvature, distinct striations, and robust form, this stibnite specimen is a superb example of the species.
