Quartz, Microcline, and Epidote
Quartz, Microcline, and Epidote
3rd Level "Silver Forest," Mass C Mine, Ontonagon County, Michigan, USA
42 x 28 x 14 mm
A beautiful milky quartz specimen lightly encrusted with distinctive orange microcline crystals, accented by bright green epidote and perched atop dark amygdaloidal basalt. This lovely piece comes from the historic Mass C shaft in Ontonagon, Michigan. I acquired this specimen from Karl Schaffer, who collected it in the early 70s when he and his friends were exploring old mine shafts—venturing up to half a mile underground. These shafts are now inaccessible, and very few of these specimens are available on the market. The orange coloration of the microcline is due to disseminated copper, offering a notable contrast against the quartz and epidote. A unique and tangible piece of Michigan's rich mining history.
